The $63 billion connector industry includes electro-mechanical and fiber optic components that connect circuits, systems and infrastructures with demountable electronic, fiber optic and power-connecting components. They range from petrol and electric automotive (connectors’ largest market) to tablet and phone Lightning and USB-type connectors, to active opical transceivers’ cable assemblies. The connector industry scope includes plugs invented in 1890 to expanded beam single-mode fiber optic connectors with micron precision alignment being used in high-performance computing and communications (HPCC).
Among the many dynamics facing this industry, one of the most profound is cloud computing from hyperscale data centers. These centers will adopt silicon photonics, optical interconnects and convert processing power of public computer systems to "data as a service" (DAAS). This webinar will give a brief overview of the connector industry, its technology roadblocks, industry dynamics and future direction. It also points to the MIT Silicon Photonics Technology Roadmap and other sources that detail the connector industry.
