Optical data transmission continues to improve and displace copper on four fronts: (1) becoming technically and economically viable for shorter and shorter distances; (2) requiring less energy to transmit data; (3) enabling transmission of higher data rates; and (4) achieving the I/O data density (Gb/s per mm2) that is needed for anticipated devices of the future.
iNEMI’s Optoelectronics Roadmap webinar will cover data transmission that utilizes optical technology over optical fiber and other waveguides across distances of thousands of kilometers down to a few millimeters (on-chip). This webinar will highlight the status and key attributes of critical optical data transmission applications such as: telecommunications, fiber to the X (including cable TV), local area networks, data centers, plastic optical fiber (automotive), active optical cables, backplanes, on-card optical I/O, optical transmission into and out of package, on-chip interconnect, and transmitting data through free space.
It will also summarize the influencers for this technology, such as the market drivers and data communication limits, and detail the current optical data transmission situation across applications, with a look at financial implications and the technology needs, gaps and challenges for optical data communications. Critical infrastructure issues, such as cost-effective packaging and recommendations from the roadmap team will also be addressed.
