To help eliminate creep corrosion, industry has initiated significant effort to better understand its cause and mitigation. iNEMI had an experimental program using mixed-flowing gases (MFG) test studying the creep corrosion during 2009-2012, which compared the sensitivity of various surface finishes and fluxes to corrosion. Then from 2013 iNEMI launched a study using flower of sulfur (FoS) test for creep corrosion. The goal is to provide the industry a simple and proven test to evaluate PCBA technologies against creep corrosion. Significant experiments have been done in Phases 1 and 2 to design the FoS test chamber, and to develop the test procedures to demonstrate creep corrosion and to compare with field failures. Phase 3 focused on studying the effect of relative humidity on creep corrosion, and further improving the test setup and procedure.
